The poet confirmed to her brother (and my walking buddy), Andy Wyatt, that this composition is based on a real event.
The invitation came last month,
An 'open mic' for spoken word,
A mouthpiece for an unsung bard,
A chance to get our best work heard.
A lovely shop set on the square
Would clear some space for us to meet.
A glass of wine, a microphone,
A cushion or a comfy seat.
We drifted in, out of the rain,
All took our turn to stand and read.
We clapped,
and laughed,
encouraged, smiled,
And sometimes we stood up and cheered.
We heard of places far away,
Of broken hearts and daring-do.
We spoke in rhyme and brevity,
In free verse, limericks, haiku.
And in between we stopped to chat,
To drink our wine and compare notes.
One girl had brought her own guitar
And sung a lovely song she wrote.
The evening ended, as it must,
We all left having made new friends,
Encouraged and spurred onto write.
A lovely evening in the end.
